Dan G. Sloan

Dan G. Sloan Sr., 88, longtime Emlenton resident, died peacefully at home with his children by his side, on September 6th.

He was born in Franklin, to Donald E. Sloan Sr. and Thelma Elizabeth Ginander Sloan

He was educated at Emlenton Schools, where he graduated in 1945. Dad played football, coached by Norbert Masters, and once played 2 games in one day. During WWII, he worked at the post office and Quaker State refinery before entering the Army under the Accelerated Induction Program, shortly after his 18th birthday. Unable to attend his graduation from Emlenton High School, a chair was draped with the flag, as was the custom.

Trained for the Invasion of the Japanese Home Islands, he was aboard a troop train in Wyoming when the Japanese surrendered after the nuclear attacks. Among other duties he managed the Officers Club at MacArthur's Headquarters at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, during the occupation of the Philippines and Japan.

Honorably discharged in 1946, he worked in the family insurance business, before he attended Colgate University. Graduated in 1951, he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, The Outing Club and was manager and coach of the Ski team.

On August 28th, 1948, he married Rosemary Bowie, daughter of James L. and Lucille McCoy Bowie at the brides' home in Emlenton. He and his beloved wife enjoyed many happy times together with friends and family during their 67 year marriage.

He began his career working for the Pennsylvania Dept. of Forests and Waters at Cook Forest State Park. Later, he worked at Crawford Industries and Pennsylvania Glass Sand Corp in the field of sales and marketing.

Following retirement in 1987, he and Rosemary returned to Emlenton and the old family home. In retirement, he was a keen golfer and skier and taught his children, grandchildren and their friends the basics of these pursuits. A longtime member of Foxburg Country Club, He spent many happy hours golfing and socializing with friends, where he scored 5 holes in one.

Dan was a Mason and he served on the board of the Emlenton Medical Center, Foxburg Free Library Board and the Emlenton Area Ambulance Association. He was a Deacon and member of the choir at the First Presbyterian Church. He was an avid reader and enjoyed walking till his final days.

Survivors include his beloved Rosemary, 3 children, Barbara (Brendan) McCormick, of Naperville, Illinois, Daniel G. Sloan, Jr, his long term caregiver at the family home, and Nancy Ann Sloan of Longmont , Colorado. Also, three grandchildren, Meghan McCormick of Naperville, Illinois; Brendan M. McCormick, Jr. of Denver, Colorado; and Austin D. McCormick and his wife, Jessica of Merchantville, New Jersey. He is also survived by his much loved cat, Myrtle.

There will be no visitation.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
