Glenn H. Maurer

October 21, 1925 — May 15, 2013

Glenn H. Maurer, 87 of Belmar Rd., Franklin passed away early Wednesday morning May 15, 2013 surrounded by his family at UPMC Northwest in Seneca.



Born October 21, 1925 in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Howard W. and Victoria Faulhaber Maurer.



He attended Oil City Schools and graduated in 1943 from Oil City High School.



He proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII as a F1/c in the Pacific Theater from 1943-1946. He was recalled by the U.S. Army to active duty as a 2nd Lt. towards the end of the Korean War where he served as a liaison officer between his 65th operations detachment and Board 4, an Army testing unit at Ft. Bliss, TX.



From 1948-1952 he attended Utah State University in Logan, Utah where he graduated with a B.S. in Biology. After his discharge from the Army, he worked for Travelers Insurance and State Auto Insurance as an adjuster from 1953-1959, in Westmoreland and Somerset County Areas.



In 1960 he was hired by the Civil Service Command when the government decided, due to the Cold War, to move its Civil Service records into the old lime stone mines in Boyers, PA. He was in the first groups to begin operation from the underground facility.



Mr. Maurer later returned to college, attending Westminster College where he earned a Master?s Degree in Education. He taught at New Wilmington High School in 1962 and then moved to the Victory Area High School for two years. Upon the consolidation of Victory and Franklin High Schools he came to Franklin High School and taught English until the time of his retirement on June 4, 1988.



He greatly enjoyed photography, gardening, traveling, camping, hunting, and fishing in his younger years.



On September 3, 1948 he married the former Shirley Dunlap at the Good Hope Lutheran Church in Oil City and she preceded him in death on January 18, 1997.



Surviving are five children; Lindie Yardley and her husband William of Suffolk, VA, Laurie Strunk and her husband Tom of Inman, SC, Craig Maurer and his wife Susan of South Windsor, CT, Jody Maurer and his girlfriend Vicky Lewis of Franklin and Amy Kline and her husband Garrett of Franklin; one brother, Ken Maurer and his wife Carol of Oil City; and a sister in law Sally Maurer of Ft. Myers, FL.



Also surviving are five grandchildren; Amber Murray, Kristin Church and her husband Brendan, Brian Maurer, Emily Swindelles and her husband Ed and Taylor Kline and six great-grandchildren.



In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rebecca Maurer, and a brother, Stanley Maurer.



Family and friends welcome Friday from 3:00 ? 7:00 P.M. at Huff Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc. 312 West Park St. Franklin.



Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Randy Kightlinger, Chaplain for VNA Hospice and Sugar Creek Station, officiating.



Interment will follow at Graham Cemetery where full military honors will be rendered by the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard.
