Helen E.Betty� Sheffer, 90, of 70 Meadville Pike, died at 4:33 a.m. Friday December 10, 2010 at The Caring Place, Franklin.
She was born in Franklin, in the house at 70 Meadville Pike on August 16, 1920, a daughter of Francis Marion and Alice May Griffen Shuffstall Sheffer. She graduated from Rocky Grove High School in 1938. She later graduated from E. G. Meyer Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Buffalo, New York with a degree in nursing, and Cum Laude from Seattle Pacific University in Seattle Washington with a degree in Public Health. She was a graduate of University Hospital of Cleveland School of Anesthesia.
Her first employment was as a visiting nurse with The Red Cross of Franklin, then as a private duty nurse in Buffalo, N. Y. For several years she was the Sugarcreek Township (Valley Grove) school nurse and the home school visitor.
Miss Sheffer worked as an anesthesia nurse at the Grove City, Franklin and Butler hospitals retiring from Butler Memorial in 1983 after more than 20 years of service.
She was a charter member of the Venango County Historical Society, a member of the Historic Franklin Preservation Group, a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and served on the advisory council of the program for many years. She served on the Board of the Franklin Red Cross during WWII.
She was also a member of the Venango Toy Makers, the Utica Senior Center. A woman of strong faith and a life long member of the Franklin Free Methodist Church where she had served as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendant, trustee, steward, financial secretary and assistant treasurer.
Miss Sheffer enjoyed attending community activities and volunteered at the Good Shepherd Thrift Shop on 13th Street, Franklin for several years and was a tour guide on the Oil City Titusville Railroad.
She was also well known for her button collection and was a member of the Meadville Button Club and the Keystone Button Club of Pittsburgh. Another large collection was her angel collection.
She helped her father excavate the Indian Rock Shelter on the Uhler Farm on Bully Hill, Franklin. The artifacts are on display in the Venango County Court House.
She is survived by nephews, nieces and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one nephew, one niece and two brothers, Dr. Marcus Sheffer and Dr. Marion Leonard Sheffer.
Friends will be received in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St., Franklin from 2-4 & 6-8p.m. Friday. A funeral service will be conducted in the Free Methodist Church, 1226 Buffalo Street in Franklin at 10:00 a.m. Saturday with Rev. George Oglesby and Rev. Frank Walford officiating.
Interment will be made in the Franklin Cemetery.
Betty had a heart for the Haiti relief efforts and requested no floral tributes rather contributions to that effort. She supported The Munos Missionary Support, Free Methodist Church of North America, 700 N. High School Road, Indianapolis, IN 46214.
