Hortensia S. "Sam" Miller

Hortensia S. "Sam" Miller, 82 of Franklin, passed away at 3:34 pm on Sunday, October 29, 2017 at Transitions Healthcare Autumn Grove in Harrisville. Sam was born on July 1, 1935 in Needles, CA.

Sam proudly served her Country in the United States Army as a medic. She was a nurse for many years having worked at Fairfax Hospital in Fairfax, VA and Leewood Nursing Home.

Sam had been with her husband and companion, Richard L. "Butch" Vogan Jr. for over thirty years.

Sam had a smile that would light up the world and had a laugh to go with it. She loved to help people and loved her family dearly as well as her pets. She also enjoyed wine tasting and going on many wine tours in the area. She spent a lot of time antiquing looking for and collecting glass items with the perfect shade of green coloring. She also enjoyed camping and traveling, especially her frequent trips to Maine.

Sam was Catholic by faith.

In addition to her husband, Sam is survived by her children, Thomas Houseknecht and his wife Joy of Manassas, VA, James Houseknecht and his wife Terri of Conneaut, OH, and Yvonne Davis of Richmond, VA, three grandchildren, Jason Humphreys of Richmond, VA, Kristen Houseknecht of Hagerstown, MD, and Claire Houseknecht of North Carolina, daughters-in-law Katie Walsh Houseknecht and Diane Houseknecht, mother-in-law Phyllis Vogan of Franklin, and her beloved dog, Loki.

Sam was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, John Kenneth Houseknecht Sr., a son John "Jack" Houseknecht Jr, son-in-law John Davis, father-in-law Richard L. Vogan Sr., and her beloved cats Mosby and Sherman.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Huff Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Inc. 312 W. Park Street Franklin, where family and friends are welcome from 4 pm until 7 pm Thursday, November 2, 2017. A vigil service will take place at the funeral home on Thursday at 4:30 pm. A blessing service will be held in the funeral home's chapel on Friday, November 3, at 10 am with the Deacon Reed, Of St. Patrick Church, officiating.

Full Military Honors will be rendered by the V.E.T.S. Honor Guard at the cemetery.

Interment will follow in Franklin Cemetery.
