J. Carl Eakin

J. Carl Eakin, 86, of Flower Avenue, Grove City, formerly of Harrisville, passed away at 8:15 p.m. Friday at the Grove City Medical Center. Born in Clintonville, Feb. 17, 1924, he was the son of Homer R. and Mary L. (Hoffman) Eakin, who are deceased. Eakin was a graduate of the former Clintonville High School and had worked at Willies Smoke House in Harrisville for several years and at the A&P grocery in Mercer. He was a member of the Harrisville United Methodist Church, where he had been the financial secretary for 32 years and treasurer for both the building fund and the Methodist men. Eakin was a member of the Grove City Lodge 603, the New Castle Consistory and the Zem Zem Shrine of Erie. He also was an avid gardener and enjoyed working with wood. Eakin was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a sergeant in the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Bernie M. (Hancox) Cummings Eakin, who he married Oct. 19, 1991; daughter Crystal F. Agostino and her husband, Michael N., of Harrisville; a son, Steven J. Eakin and his wife, Sissy, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; stepsons, Larry Cummings and his wife, Deb, of Mercer, Rob Cummings of Jackson Center, and Bruce Cummings and his wife, Marcie, of Grove City. He also is survived by a sister, Shirley Baker and her husband, Bernard, of Clintonville; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Garnet, on April 11, 1989; his son, Timothy; and two brothers. Eakin- Friends of J. Carl Eakin, who died Friday, Oct. 29, 2010, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Jamison Funeral Home, 117 N. Main St., Harrisville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. William E. Hastings of the Harrisville United Methodist Church and the Rev. Willard S. Morse, minister of visitation for the Grace United Methodist Church of Grove City will officiate. Internment will follow at Wolf Creek Cemetery in Worth Township.
