John C. Hughes

John Carroll Hughes Jr., 89, of 1220 Chestnut St., formerly of Pone Lane, died at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday December 20, 2011 at UPMC Seneca.

A son of John C. and Ida Mae Gates Hughes he was born in Rockland on November 21, 1922. He was a 1941 graduate of Rockland High School.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II he served in the European theatre with Company C, 4th Medical Battalion. He was awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Mr. Hughes worked as a sub-assembler at C.P.T. for over 38 years. He retired in 1980.

While living in Rockland he was a member of the Rockland Volunteer Fire Department after moving to the Franklin area he was a charter member of the Sandycreek Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. For over 20 years he was a member of the Venango County Camping Caravan. He was a fervent fan of the Pittsburgh sports teams particularly the Pirates.

On July 14, 1950 he married the former Elaine L. Henderson. She preceded him in death on December 16, 1976. He later married Ruth Henderson Viele and she died in February 1988.

Surviving are a daughter Sandra L. Baker and her husband Gary of Franklin; a son Ronald E. Hughes and his wife Patty of Gettysburg; six grandchildren: Jason A. Baker and his wife Shannon of Hermitage, Shawn C. Baker and his wife Johanna of Greenville, Ryan P. Baker of Franklin, Heather C. Baker of Pittsburgh, Scott J. Hughes and Shannon E. Hughes both of Gettysburg; two great-grandchildren Emily G. Baker of Greenville and Karsten J. Baker of Hermitage. Also surviving are three step-daughters Carol Sigworth and her husband Jim of Schillington, Trish Fenchock and her husband Joe of Titusville and Tamara Bell and her husband Paul of Cooperstown; a sister Betty Brooks of Franklin and a brother Richard D. Hughes of Seneca.

Friends will be received in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park St. from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held in St. John?s Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. Friday with The Rev. Holly Davis, rector of St. John?s officiating.

Interment will follow in Rockland Cemetery.
