Lucille C. Hoover, 88 died at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2009 in The Caring Place, Franklin.
She was born in Oakman, Alabama on May 22, 1921 a daughter of Denver C. and Ethel Cannon Covin. She graduated from high school in Alabama.
At the age of 20 and one year after the invasion of Pearl Harbor she signed up to join the WAAC. She completed tough basic training courses and six months later enlisted in the newly formed WAC after the WAAC had been disbanded.
She attained the rank of Sergeant and served in New Guinea, Australia and the Philippines, managing V-Mail stations in a 24-hour-a-day effort to move mail throughout the Pacific theater of operations.
Mrs. Hoover was medical secretary for Dr. Manson Brown in Franklin for 22 years. After this in 1983 she took over the position of Venango County?s Veterans Affairs Director, a position she held for 11 years retiring in 1991.
She was an active member of St. John?s Episcopal Church in Franklin serving on St. Monica?s Guild, was director of the altar Guild and was a Sunday school teacher.
She also served on the board of the Venango County Historical Society, Franklin Regional Medical Center Corporation Board, The Franklin Hospital Auxiliary, the Zonta Club, Secretary?s Club, Jr. Women?s Club the American Legion and P.T.A.
She married C. Clair Hoover on November 9, 1945 and he died on November 10, 1960.
She is survived by a daughter Paula J. Harry and her husband Dan of Franklin, PA; a grandson David C. Harry of Atlanta, GA; a granddaughter Tracy H. Miller and her husband John of Fallston, MD; two great granddaughters Madelyn & Meredith Miller of Fallston MD; two sisters Ottie Turner of Jasper, AL and Dean Randolph of Tuscaloosa, AL; a brother Joe Harve Covin and his wife Anna of Jasper, AL.; two brothers in law Eugene Hoover & Paul Hoover and his wife Zeetah of Franklin; four sisters in law Charlotte Covin of Tuscaloosa, AL, Audine Hoover of Jacksonville, FL, Betty Hoover of Franklin and Marcella Hoover of Franklin. She is also survived by a long time friend Mrs. James (Sally) Cochran of Franklin, PA and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters Eleanor Blackwood and Charlene Blackston; one brother John D. Covin; four brothers in law Russell, Harold, Terry, and Robert Hoover; and three sisters in law Rachel, Lucie, and Mary Ellen Hoover.
Friends will be received from 6-8 P.M. Sunday in Huff Chapel Inc., 312 West Park St. Franklin.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Monday in St. John Episcopal Church, 1145 Buffalo St, Franklin with The Rev. Holly Davis, rector, officiating
Interment will follow in Franklin Cemetery.
