Dr. Warren James McCandless, 88, long-time Franklin physician of 601 Wendy Way, died Wednesday March 16, 2011 at 8:15 p.m. at The Caring Place in Franklin.

Born September 16, 1922 in Harrisville, he was the son of Paul Revere McCandless and Laura Wood McCandless.

Warren graduated from Harrisville High School in 1940 and received his pre-medical education at Grove City College. He was graduated from Temple University School of Medicine in April 1946. He served his internship Abington Memorial Hospital in Philadelphia and then, as a physician served two years in the Medical Corps of the U.S.Army stationed in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. McCandless did post graduate study at Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans and at the Lahey Clinic in Boston before coming to join the Franklin Medical Group in 1957.

For the next 50 years Dr. McCandless was very involved with his practice, the Franklin Hospital, and the community. His congenial personality, ready wit and devoted service endeared him to his many patients. He was a member of the Board and President of the Staff at the hospital. He was also instrumental in starting the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.

Warren was active for a number of years in the Northwestern Pa. Heart Association, serving as a director, member of the executive board and as president.

Dr. McCandless was devoted to his church, First Presbyterian Church in Franklin, serving as an elder, president of the Board of Trustees and a session member.

He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge of Grove City and the Erie Zem Zem Temple. He was also a life member of the Franklin Elks, past president of the Franklin Club, Community Concert Association board member, member of the Wanango Country Club and the 100 Club.

In 1979 he was honored by the Franklin Chamber of Commerce as their Man of the Year for his service to the community.

In his spare time he enjoyed his hobbies, photography, music and antique cars. For many years sang in the Presbyterian Choir, sang in the Messiah and in Civic Operetta?s production of the Mikado.

The love of his life was his 1932 Rolls Royce which he had for 50 years. He and his family enjoyed many wonderful trips with the car, going to meets, winning ribbons and making friends with other car enthusiasts in the Rolls Royce Owners Club.

In 1949, Warren married the former Ruth Class, who preceded him in death in 1956. In 1960 he married Anne Wasson, who preceded him in death in 2000. On January 19, 2002 he married Catherine S. Teig who survives.

Also surviving are his son James Warren McCandless and his wife Lori of Franklin; his daughter Margaret Anne Sood and her husband Rajiv of Germantown, MD; his step-sons Joseph B. Teig and wife Carol of New York, NY, David H. Teig of San Francisco, CA, Stephen J. Teig of Franklin and Michael A. Teig and wife Michelle of Easthampton, MA; four grandchildren Jena and Ryan McCandless of Franklin and Robert and Laura Sood of Germantown, MD.; three step-grandchildren Chloe and Maya Teig of New York, NY and Isaac Teig of Easthampton, MA. Also surviving are his sister Isabel Hine of Charlotte NC and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. McCandless was preceded in death by his parents, a brother John McCandless and a sister Margie Henderson.

Friends will be received in the Huff Chapel, 312 W. Park S. from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Friday.

Funeral services will be held in the First Presbyterian Church, 1250 Elk Street at 10 a.m. Saturday with Interim Pastor the Rev. Dale Francis officiating.

Interment will follow in the Franklin Cemetery.
